What is Lorem Ipsum and where does it come from?
Lorem Ipsum is not random gibberish. It is deliberately corrupted Latin taken from sections 1.10.32–1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC. Words were added, removed, and altered until the passage reads like English-shaped nonsense. The opening "Lorem ipsum" is itself a truncation of dolorem ipsum — "pain itself."
The origin was traced by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden–Sydney College, who chased down the rare word consectetur and matched it to a 1914 Loeb Classical Library edition of Cicero translated by H. Rackham. On that edition the Latin line breaks mid-word as ...do- at the foot of one page and resumes with lorem ipsum on the next — which is exactly how the placeholder got its truncated first two words.

This generator does not store the full passage. It draws from a fixed 70-word vocabulary (lorem, ipsum, dolor, sit, amet, consectetur, adipiscing, elit…) and assembles random sentences of 8–15 words grouped into paragraphs of 5–8 sentences. Because the standard text is in the public domain, you can use the output in any personal or commercial project without attribution.

HTML wrapping only applies to the Paragraphs type. Choosing Words or Sentences with HTML selected still returns plain text with no <p> or <li> tags — switch Type to Paragraphs if you need wrapped markup.

The hard limit most generators hide
This tool caps output at 100 blocks per run (LIMITS.max = 100) and refuses anything below 1. Every block is freshly randomized from the 70-word list with Math.random(), so two runs at the same settings rarely match — useful when you want varied filler instead of the same paragraph repeated. If you need more than 100 paragraphs, run it twice and concatenate.
One real gotcha: only the first block honors the "Start with Lorem ipsum" toggle. Blocks 2 through 100 always begin with random Latin, which is by design — repeating "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" on every paragraph would create the unnatural patterns placeholder text is meant to avoid.
When to use dummy text — and when real content matters
Lorem Ipsum is right for wireframes, typographic scale tests, and client mockups, where readable copy would distract from the layout. It is the wrong choice for usability tests, accessibility audits, and final UI copy. Fake Latin hides real line lengths, reading order, and contrast issues, so problems get baked in before anyone catches them. The W3C WCAG guidelines require a text contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text — a check you can only do meaningfully against the content users will actually read.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the generated text look different every run?
Each block is assembled on the fly from a fixed Latin word pool with sentences of 8–15 words and paragraphs of 5–8 sentences. That random distribution is deliberate: repeating one fixed phrase would create unnatural rivers of whitespace that no longer mimic how real prose fills a layout.
Can I publish Lorem Ipsum text in real content?
Legally yes — the standard passage is centuries old and effectively public domain, so no attribution is required. Practically you should not: it exists as placeholder scaffolding, and shipping it to production reads as unfinished work to users and search engines alike.
Does generating placeholder text send anything to a server?
No. Generation happens locally in your browser tab, and Toolk’s page analytics do not receive your settings or output. It also keeps working offline once loaded, which suits early-stage mockups built without a backend.
How much text can I generate in one go?
Up to 100 blocks per run, selectable as paragraphs, sentences, words, or list items. That ceiling keeps the tab responsive; if a design needs more volume, generate again and concatenate rather than asking one request to build megabytes of filler.
How do I get HTML paragraphs instead of plain text?
